Natural Diet Pills for Weight Loss – How Safe are They?

Many of us have heard horror stories about 'diet pills' that were popular a generation or so ago. These pills, available with a prescription, were originally 'speed' - sold in a slightly different form, as a street drug. And yes, these pills made women lose weight - sometimes a lot of weight. However, this weight loss came at a heavy price. Many people become addicted to diet pills. Others took them for so long, or in such heavy doses, that they ruined their health.

Nowadays, those types of diet pills still exist, but they aren't prescribed or used as often as they used to. In general, people today are more aware of the importance of good health and working in a natural way. Anyway, losing weight is still a concern, and many people are looking for an easier way to do it – a 'shortcut', so to speak. This is where naturopathy comes in.

Natural, natural or herbal medicine has been around for a hundred years - long before Western medicine or modern pharmaceuticals. It has also come a bit of a revival of late. People are disillusioned with the mainstream medical system, and are looking for answers through an age-old system of medicine, which is based on natural substances such as herbs and vitamins.

In fact, you can browse the shelves of your local drugstore to see how true this statement is. Chances are, there will be almost as many herbal medicines available on your drugstore shelves as there are traditional medicines. Even some doctors are coming to accept the role that herbal medicine and naturopathy have to play. Even if they don't support it, many doctors will assume that naturopathy does no harm in any way.

So, when we are looking for a quick solution to the weight problems that plague many of us, natural or herbal diet pills can seem very appealing. In fact, they actually have their strong points. Herbal diet pills aren't speed—they're not the same as the hard-drug diet pills of a generation ago, and they work in an entirely different way. For example, some natural diet pills act as 'glucophages' - they 'eat up' the extra glucose circulating in your system after you eat them. According to some, glucose is exactly what makes you gain weight. It can also lead to other problems like diabetes later in life. Glucophage can be a great way to eliminate excess glucose in your system if you eat too much.

Of course, as might be expected, this doesn't work well for everyone - in fact, it sometimes backfires. You can use this as an excuse to eat even more, in fact, no amount of Glucophage can save you in this situation! It may also be true that this type of herbal remedy has inconsistent results – it may work much better on some people than others. That being said, however, there are people who have used Glucophage and have had excellent results.

Other types of herbal diet pills act as appetite suppressants. They just make you want to eat less, plain and simple, as the diet pills of a generation ago did. There the similarity ends, though—herbal diet pills are less effective than medicine, but they're also far less harmful.

Then there are herbal supplements that you will take to clear toxins from your body. Some people choose to do this once or twice a year—early spring, in particular, seems to be a good time. The herbal supplements you take during a cleanse are not diet pills, but the end result of a cleanse is often weight loss. In addition, it may be much easier for you to lose weight after cleansing. For one thing, you'll have kicked out any bad food habits you've accumulated!

Diet pills of the seventies weren't a great idea, except perhaps in extreme cases where weight loss was inevitable. Still, there were probably better ways to do it. However, don't assume that all diet pills are bad — and check out the new types of herbal dietary supplements available today.
